Research Task: 'Imagine' by John Lennon

Research task; Imagine, John Lennon The song ‘Imagine’ by John Lennon, is a song protesting for world peace. The lyrics “Imagine all the people living life in peace” are used to help the audience identify what Lennon is protesting for. The use of the word “Imagine” informs us that we are way off finding world peace and that it is something we should all hope for and try to reach. World peace is the idea of living in a state of happiness, freedom and peace within and among all people and nations on Planet Earth; a world with no violence is also part of the meaning of ‘World Peace’. Lennon knows that his dream cannot come true in the near future so it is just a fantasy for now. In the first verse of the song, the lyrics “Imagine there’s no heaven” are sung, I think that he believes that the world would be a much better place without religion because religion brings disagreement into this world and some religions are violent and want you to sacrifice someone so if we didn’t have religion in our world then earth would be a much more peaceful place. Also in this verse are the lyrics “No hell below us, above us only sky”, this is to tell us to live in the moment and not wait around for our deaths; he also means that we should stop thinking about future because this makes us miss out of the present too. Lennon includes the lyrics “Imagine there’s no countries”, he means political and geographical boundaries as this would mean there is no reason for war. The chorus of the song, “You may say I’m a dreamer, but I’m not the only one. I hope one day you’ll join us, and the world will be as one”. He uses the chorus to explain how much potential there is for humanity. In the second line of the chorus he is explaining that only when everybody is completely on board then we will have world peace, but we won’t be able to reach it without them. With the first line of the chorus he is informing the audience that there are others out there that wish for world peace. The chorus as a whole, of this song, is used to ask the audience to try and make a difference if they would really like something to change. Another verse in the song starts with “Imagine no possessions, I wonder if you can”. Possessions are what people treasure the most and he is saying that he doesn’t think we are ready for world peace yet because we all cling onto things. Having no possessions would have the ability to make us all equals potentially, although, many aren’t able to see everybody at equals. The music video for this song starts with John Lennon and his second wife Yoko Ono taking a walk to a building. Once inside the building John Lennon sits down at the piano and starts playing. Everything in the room is white. As the song goes on Yoko Ono starts opening up the shutters to let light into the room. The room is white and empty except for a piano, this is used to represent the peace at which he is protesting for in his song. There is also nothing really happening in the music video, this is so that the audience focuses intently to the lyrics of the song. The inspiration for this song by John Lennon came from Yoko Ono’s book of poems ‘Grapefruit’. John Lennon had previously left ‘The Beatles’ but it was a messy breakup when he left.
