Analysing 3 music videos

Cinematography à During the music video there are many low-angle shots, these can be seen when the singer is performing a performative element of singing or lip syncing. Lots of cross-cutting occurs in this music video, there is one that matches up perfectly with the shot that it transforms into, this is at 1:42. There are some parts of the music video where deep focus has been used to keep both the subject and the background in focus at the same time, they are of the singer dancing on the roof, but not all of them, for example 1:51 has a deep focus. The music video has included some flashbacks of him performing live on stage. This music video has a slight bit of framing, but not much. There is an iris out at the end of the music video, there is also an iris in around the middle of the music video at 1:56. The camera pans and tilts to capture a good short shot of the singer performing.

Mise-en-scene à Travis Greene wears a hat when he is performing on stage in the music video, this is mise-en-scene because in Bruno Mars’ ‘Just the way you are’ music video, he is wearing a hat. The location of the music video for ‘Intentional’ is the roof of a building in a city. Travis Greene is wearing a black hoodie and a pair of jeans for the bits filmed on top of a roof.

Cinematography à Throughout the music video the camera is angled at a higher position than its subject so it uses high-angle shots. An establishing shot is used at the beginning of the music video to show the location, it lasts 25 seconds but it also moves backwards. At both the start and the end of this music video there is a fade in/out to a black screen. There are several jump cuts in the music video. Most of the shots in the music video are long shots to show all the important performance in the shot, although at the start there is a medium close-up shot. The music video incorporates many panning shots to keep the camera moving all of the time, the camera also tilts towards the dancers. Zooming also occurs in this music video. There are also multiple aerial shots and there is a reverse-angle towards the beginning.

Mise-en-scene à Ben Hazlewood’s ‘Lay me down’ music video is filmed in the middle of a road, this location is similar to Vanessa Carlton’s ‘A thousand miles’ music video. The characters in the music video stay in the same clothes the entire time. There are no props used in this video.

Cinematography àThere is a close up shot but most of the shots in this music video are medium shots, with a few being medium close-up shots. There was some cross-cutting to show the 3 people going to be treated for mental health problems at the same time. There are multiple inter-titles at the beginning of the music video and a few more inter-titles during the music video, these are mostly all to do with the news. The music video uses jump cuts to change from one shot to the next. Focus is used in this music video when the lady is going to the clinic, the lady, the doctor and the nurse go form being out of focus to be fully focused.

Sound à All of the sound in the music video is non-diegetic.

Mise-en-scene à There are only changes in costume to represent different days. The news has been used to inform the audience what is happening at the time of this music video. Many different locations have been used in this music video as it has been used to tell the story of 3 different characters, and the band have been filmed performing their song in a small room.
